Do you know the man really likes you?
Jesus likes you. He really likes you.
He’s got something in mind for you.
Aren’t you curious about that?
I know something you don’t know.
Jesus is clear in his mind, but his soul is weary.
He is preparing to die, and you are his hand.
You’re very alive, and he has plans for you.
Two by two he’ll send you all out,
Four feet of peace between you:
Seventy-two lambs amongst teeming wolves,
And you will receive your due.
Heal where you may, as we have done
And bring word of the Kingdom
For the day of judgment is near
And those who reject us reject him, too.
What will they say when he’s gone, when we’re gone?
He was a kind man? He was a wise man, a moral teacher?
We were purpose-driven, with seven highly-effective habits?
Who’s going to be the one to set them all straight?
You.
In this piece, I imagine that Jesus has told the 12 ahead of time about his plans for the 72 (or 70, depending on your translation)… and that Peter “leaks” the news because of his own inflated sense of importance. See Luke 10… and contrast with the tone of Psalm 8, perhaps.
